Molecular Culture® ID for Osteomyelitis Diagnostics
The Challenge of Diagnosing Diabetic Foot Osteomyelitis (DFO)
Diabetic foot osteomyelitis is a severe complication of diabetes, affecting 20% of foot infections and contributing to over 80% of lower extremity amputations. Traditional culture methods are slow and often fail to detect certain bacteria, particularly anaerobic species, limiting effective treatment decisions and posing a significant disease burden.
The Solution: Molecular Culture® ID.
Molecular Culture® ID provides untargeted bacterial species detection within hours, overcoming the limitations of traditional culture methods. This innovative technology enables faster and more comprehensive diagnostics for DFO.
The Impact in Healthcare.
- Results are delivered in hours, not days.
- Detects a broad range of bacterial species, including anaerobes missed by traditional methods.
- Supports targeted therapy, improving treatment outcomes and reducing the risk of amputation.
Clinical Performance of Molecular Culture® ID.
In a multicenter, randomized controlled trial conducted across hospitals in The Netherlands, 53 bone biopsy samples from suspected diabetic foot osteomyelitis cases were analyzed. Molecular Culture® ID demonstrated superior performance compared to traditional culture, identifying a broader range of bacterial species, including hard-to-culture anaerobes, with unmatched speed. This enhanced diagnostic capability enables clinicians to make earlier, more precise treatment decisions, ultimately improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of complications like amputation.
