Investment Supports Expansion of Molecular Diagnostics
Dutch diagnostics company Inbiome has secured a $16 million investment round from a consortium of investors that includes the NATO Innovation Fund (NIF).
The company develops molecular diagnostics designed to identify bacterial pathogens directly from clinical samples within hours instead of days.
The investment reflects growing demand for faster infectious disease diagnostics in both civilian healthcare and military medicine.
Faster Identification of Resistant Infections
According to the company, the technology is currently implemented in twenty hospitals across Europe, including Amsterdam UMC.
European approval currently covers seven infection applications, including meningitis and joint infections.
The Molecular Culture platform identifies bacterial DNA directly from patient material without relying solely on conventional culture workflows.
Interest From Military Medicine
“We see many opportunities to improve diagnostics in conflict zones with Inbiome’s technology,” said Amalia Kontesi of the NATO Innovation Fund in comments published by FD.
Military medicine has become an important area of interest because trauma-related infections are often associated with resistant bacteria and delayed treatment.
“In Ukraine, about 80% of infections are caused by resistant bacteria,” said Dries Budding, co-founder of Inbiome. “That makes it very important to provide targeted treatment as quickly as possible.”
Focus Remains on Hospital Adoption
While military applications are receiving increased attention, the company states that its primary focus remains expansion within hospital microbiology and infectious disease diagnostics.
The funding will support commercial growth and broader implementation of molecular microbiology workflows across healthcare systems.
